[tab] Coke first tried a marketing translation with the name Ke-kou-ke-la because when pronounced it sounded roughly like Coca-Cola. It wasn’t until after thousands of signs had been printed that they discovered that the phrase means “bite the wax tadpole” or “female horse stuffed with wax”, depending on the dialect. [/tab]
[tab] When realizing a cross-cultural marketing translation, the Swedish furniture giant IKEA somehow agreed upon the name “FARTFULL” for one of its new desks. We would live this one open to your interpretation…[/tab]
[tab] American Motors tried to market its new car, the “Matador”, based on the image of courage and strength. However, in Latin America the name means “killer” and was not popular on the hazardous roads in the region. [/tab]
[tab] Sometimes it’s one word of a slogan that changes the whole meaning. When Parker Pen marketed a ballpoint pen in Mexico, its ads were supposed to say “It won’t leak in your pocket and embarrass you.” However, the company mistakenly thought the Spanish word “embarazar” meant embarrass. Instead the ads said “It won’t leak in your pocket and make you pregnant.” [/tab]
[tab]Mitsubishi named a well known SUV truck after a grassland cat native to South America, yet when translating, it was only too late when they discovered that by omitting the “cat” wordand using only “PAJERO” they just named their truck to mean “the wanker” in every variation of the Spanish language. The truck is known today as Montero, everywhere but in Asia where it retained the original name.[/tab]
[tab] When Braniff translated a slogan touting its upholstery, “Fly in Leather,” it came out very wrong in Spanish translation as “Vuela en Cuero”, which for most Hispanic countries’ slang it means “Fly Naked.” [/tab]
[tab] The Scandinavian vacuum manufacturer giant Electrolux used the same campaign that was so successful at home, translated into English very literally. In the American campaign the slogan was: “Nothing sucks like an Electrolux” [/tab]
[tab] Coors blunders a very expensive campaign in Mexico when they use their slogan, “Turn It Loose,” literally translated into Spanish, that in Mexican slang it was read as “Suffer From Diarrhea.” [/tab]
[tab] When Pepsi Co. entered the Chinese market a few years ago, the translation of their slogan “Pepsi Brings you Back to Life” was a little more literal than they have intended. In Chinese, the slogan meant, “Pepsi Brings Your Ancestors Back from the Grave” [/tab]
[tab] An American T-shirt entrepreneur in Miami printed thousands of shirts for the Spanish market which promoted the Pope’s visit. Unfortunately, Instead of “I Saw the Pope” (el Papa), a very wrong, self made translation printed on his shirts read: “I Saw the Potato” (la papa) [/tab]
